EtherTrust – Company History

Origins and Foundation (2007–2009)

EtherTrust is a French technology company established in 2007 as a spin-off from research conducted at leading French academic institutions, including Télécom ParisTech and Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI), particularly the LIP6 research laboratory.

The company was founded with a clear vision: to improve digital security and privacy through innovative cryptographic technologies, secure microcontrollers, and smart card-based solutions.

From the beginning, EtherTrust focused on developing software architectures combining strong authentication, secure communications, and tamper-resistant hardware. Its approach was built around open international standards, particularly SSL/TLS protocols.

In 2009, EtherTrust received the prestigious OSEO ANVAR Innovation Award through the French National Competition for Innovative Start-ups, recognizing the potential of its security technologies.

Early Development and International Recognition (2010–2013)

During its early development, EtherTrust specialized in embedded security solutions for telecommunications, financial services, and digital identity management.

Its technology enabled SSL/TLS communication directly from secure elements, such as SIM cards and cryptographic microcontrollers, providing strong authentication and protection against identity theft and phishing attacks.

In February 2010, EtherTrust participated in Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, demonstrating embedded SSL smart card technology in partnership with Sagem Orga.

The company also contributed to international research initiatives, including SecFuNet, a European-Brazilian research project focused on secure future networks and cloud computing environments.

Technology Expansion and Standardization (2014–2017)

As cybersecurity requirements evolved, EtherTrust expanded its expertise to address emerging challenges in connected devices, cloud infrastructures, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The company developed specialized SSL/TLS/DTLS middleware designed to operate with Secure Elements, providing a hardware-based foundation for secure communication and digital identity protection.

EtherTrust’s technical approach emphasized interoperability, compliance with international standards, and the protection of cryptographic credentials.

The company also contributed to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), supporting the development of open security protocols and standards-based architectures.

Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Security (2018–2019)

With the emergence of blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies, EtherTrust applied its expertise in cryptography and secure hardware to the protection of digital assets.

The company developed smart card-based solutions for securely signing Bitcoin and Ethereum transactions while protecting private cryptographic keys.

One of its notable innovations was the EtherTrust Crypto Terminal, a portable device designed to perform sensitive cryptographic operations in a disconnected environment.

By keeping private keys offline during transaction signing, the solution aimed to reduce exposure to cyberattacks and compromised connected devices.

The Crypto Terminal was documented in a product datasheet dated March 2019, illustrating EtherTrust’s diversification into blockchain security.

Continuing Development (2020–2026)

EtherTrust has continued its activities in cybersecurity, secure elements, cryptographic software, and hardware-based authentication.

Its technology portfolio reflects expertise across several complementary fields, including secure communications, digital identity management, IoT security, and blockchain applications.

In January 2023, EtherTrust’s registered headquarters moved to Amiens, France, marking another stage in the company’s organizational history.

As of 2026, EtherTrust remains registered as an active French company, maintaining its longstanding focus on security technologies and software development.

EtherTrust Today – Security Through Innovation

For nearly two decades, EtherTrust has pursued a vision based on the principle that digital trust should be rooted in strong cryptography, secure hardware, and internationally recognized standards.

From its academic origins to its work on embedded TLS communications, secure authentication, and blockchain transaction protection, EtherTrust has developed specialized expertise at the intersection of software security and tamper-resistant hardware.

Its technological heritage is characterized by three fundamental principles:

  • Security by design: Integrating cryptographic protection directly into secure hardware and software architectures.
  • Open standards and interoperability: Promoting widely adopted security protocols and compatibility across technological ecosystems.
  • Innovation and research: Translating advanced academic research into practical security solutions.

EtherTrust’s history reflects a continuous commitment to making digital communications, identities, and transactions more secure.
